Title: Multispecialty Coder
Department: Revenue Cycle
Reports To: Revenue Cycle Supervisor/Lead Medical Coder & Audit Specialist/CBO Site Manager
Status: Full-time
Position Summary:
Responsible for accurately coding a wide range of medical specialties for ruralMED, ensuring compliance with all regulatory guidelines and maximizing reimbursement.
Qualifications:
Education and/or Experience:
• Minimum of 3-5 years of multi-specialty coding experience, preferably within a rural healthcare setting.
Licenses/Certifications Required:
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required. Additional specialty certifications (e.g., CEMC, CGSC, COSC) preferred.
General Requirements/Job Duties:
Employee must have the skills, ability and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation. Specific job duties will vary based upon client assignment. Employee will also abide by ruralMED’s policies as a condition of employment.
- Assign appropriate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes to diagnoses and procedures for professional and facility services across multiple medical specialties, including but not limited to family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, and orthopedics.
- Review medical documentation, including physician notes, operative reports, and diagnostic reports, to extract all necessary information for accurate coding.
- Abstract pertinent information from patient records for data entry and statistical reporting.
- Identify and clarify ambiguous or incomplete documentation with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure coding accuracy and compliance.
- Stay current with coding guidelines, regulations, and industry changes through continuous education and professional development.
- Participate in regular coding audits and provide feedback for process improvement.
- Collaborate with billing and revenue cycle teams to resolve coding-related denials and rejections.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA regulations.
- Assist in training and mentoring less experienced coders as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of multi-specialty coding experience, preferably within a rural healthcare setting.
- Extensive knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems, as well as medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
- Thorough understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer guidelines and regulations.
- Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and coding software.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying abreast of coding updates.
